Introducing Kayce Hughes

the designer and founder of Kayce Hughes

Marital status

Name and number of children

Reagan 19, Charlotte 17, Sophie 15, Owen 13, Clare 11, Audrey 9 and Olivia 7. (yes we have seven, yes I gave birth to all of them and no we don’t have twins)

Where are you based?

We are based in Nashville, Tennessee

Where are you from?

I am from Long Island and NYC

How did the idea for your business come about?

It started when I sewed up some vintage looking nightshirts for my daughter out of some quilting fabric.

What makes your brand/designs unique?

I design things that I love.  For me it is about beautiful colors and vintage inspiration in a way that is easy to wear for today.  Our line is classic with a little fun.

Do you feel that you’ve got your work/life balance right?

Not really.  It is a daily struggle to do all that I want to do at home and at work.  But I love the elusive challenge to do both really well.  I feel fortunate that I am able to work from home.

Do you ever wish you didn’t have a company to run and that you worked for someone else so you could leave your work in the office?

No,  If I am wishing there is probably a warm secluded tropical island involved.

How do you think of motherhood?

I wish that I could eloquently answer this question.  It is more wonderful, scary, surprizing, heart breaking and heart warming than I could have imagined.  If I didn’t absolutely love it I wouldn’t have 7 children!

How have you changed since you became a parent?

I can no longer watch movies where the mom gets sick and dies.

What is unique about designing for children?

I think that being comfortable is even more important for children.  (No point in looking fabulous if you can’t play tag)

What are your future plans for your business / designs?

We are very excited about opening our second store this month and plan to open more.

What is your favourite smell?

Dinner if someone else is cooking it.

What’s your most treasured possession?

Our camera because it captures my children that seem to grow too quickly.

When do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere and all the time but rummaging through a thrift store is one of my favorites.

How do you relax?

Many ways but some of my favorites are going for a run, sitting close to the fire in our family room and taking a long hot bath.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life immensely?

A laundress

Out of all the things your child has now what will you save for the day they become parents themselves?

Their artwork….they are all amazingly talented and some of their favourite toys.
